In the UK each year alone, there are allegedly over 8,000 reported accidents involving the use of forklift trucks. The majority of these accidents result from a lack of sufficient operating training, a lack of knowledge about the equipment, poor truck maintenance or unsuitable premises.
Several pieces of legislation apply when it comes to the use of a forklift truck and employers and operators should be aware.
Maintenance & Service
A lack of maintenance can lead to serious accidents. It is also a key factor in the breakdown of equipment and unscheduled stoppages to the work process.
The Provision and Use of Work Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98) states “Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair”
A system of daily or pre-user checks is the key to good maintenance. Regular preventative maintenance should also be scheduled in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacture of the equipment. The time interval between the various services and inspections will vary according to the intensity of use and the working environment.

Every employer has a responsibility, under Regulation 9 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER98), to ensure that employees have adequate training before they use work equipment.
Every forklift operator should receive training on each type of equipment he or she may be required to operate. Such training may be provided by an in-house instructor or an external trainer. The training provider should then issue a certificate giving details of the results of that training
